Using the Internet can be risky. Your personal information can, if it falls into a criminal’s possession, lead to identity theft.

  • Be wise to phishing scams. Many people receive e-mails that are allegedly from their banks, PayPal or other such sites. In most cases, these e-mails will prompt you to click on links that allegedly take you to the sites. In reality, fake sites that look very much like the real ones are capturing your personal information.
  • When you get a new computer, you need to clean the old computer’s hard drive before you let it out of your possession. Simply reformatting your hard drive isn’t enough: use a “washer” or “wipe” program. This software deep-cleans the hard drive, making data recovery very, very difficult. You can also remove your old hard drive and destroy it so that data recovery is impossible. Not even the best data recovery specialist can retrieve information from a hard drive that’s been smashed to zillions of pieces.

These safety measures will make your online experience safer and more enjoyable. You can browse, shop, chat and otherwise experience the joys of the Internet without worrying about your personal information.

Even so, you should still pay careful attention to your financial records: bank and credit-card statements, your yearly credit report, et cetera. Though identity theft is difficult to pull off on somebody who follows the above steps, it can still happen. Pay close attention to your financial records so that you’ll be aware of the problem – and able to solve it – as soon as possible.
